2019 - TAKE THE PLEDGE!

In 2019, we challenge you to choose one single-use item to quit. Coffee cups, water bottles, to-go containers, ziploc bags, plastic wrap, shopping bags, produce bags, iced-beverage cups. Pick one. Do it every day.

Just start. Choose a durable and reusable alternative and keep It with you.

Don’t get overwhelmed by not being able to fix everything all at once. Don’t worry if you fail, focus on the days you got it right.

First it will be a thought, then a habit, and then it will be ingrained and contagious. Quit another item. Equip yourself with another reusable alternative. Keep it with you. Repeat.

People around you will notice and be inspired. The ripple effect will begin.

Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” WH Murray

These days we have a warm fuzzy feeling about recycling. I can use a single use item because I know that it can be recycled when I am done. You take the time to clean the item and place it in the correct bin and all is good. I feel like I have done the right thing. The sad truth is that those days of recycling are coming to a close and quickly. Read More

In fact the British Society of Statistics has chosen the following for the 2018 Statistic...

“The burgeoning crisis in plastic waste has won the attention of Britain’s Royal Statistical Society, which chose 90.5 percent – the proportion of plastic waste that has never been recycled – as its international statistic of the year.” Read More

Since China will no longer will take our recycling, the problem has become ours to deal with. Sadly, the demand for recyclables is on the decline. We cannot recycle our way out of this problem. The alternative is ReThinking and ReFusing. It is time to end our dependency on recycling as it is enabling us to continue along the road to ruin. We must eliminate the the need and demand before it even hits the recycle bin.

ReThink

  • What can I eliminate?- Make a goal to eliminate one or more items.

  • How can I eliminate?- Think ahead for travel, work and leisure. Make a plan of action for your.

  • Action- bring your own- Put extra reusable bags and coffee cups in your car or travel bag.

  • Create your system- design the system that will work best for your needs and keep it with you.

ReFuse- sometimes it means refusing single use convenience trash before it hits the recycle bin or trash. Sometimes it requires forgoing something we want that might be packaged in plastic. See belwo for more ideas to add to your system.

Best of luck for decreasing your single use disposable trash for 201!
